I was born and raised in Escanaba here in the beautiful Upper Peninsula. Sure, I did my time in Wisconsin and Lower Michigan but when I had the opportunity to come back I jumped at it. I have wonderful twin daughters that I’m raising by myself and I couldn’t think of a better place to have them grown up than right here.
I’ve been doing radio far longer than I care to admit and I still can’t believe I get paid to do this.
I started playing “D.J.” in high school through the Junior Achievement Radio Program at our high school and accidentally found my dream job. As a typical high school kid I was looking to get paid for something that didn’t cut into my social life too much and didn’t involve any actual work so when I stumbled into broadcasting it was the perfect fit. The hours were sometimes kind of weird but at that age…Who Needs Sleep! By my junior year I was working at “Bright Country Radio” WBDN in Escanaba where I learned a lot because you had to do everything. With the help of lots of coffee (the first bad habit that I picked up in the business…certainly not the last) I learned about running an “air shift”, did my own news and sports, recorded commercials and most importantly found out you should never swear when the microphone is still on.
I’m really excited to be working for a first class operation like the Radio Results Network and, if you’re a listener, look forward to being a part of your life for many years to come. |

I very rarely talk about my politics on the air because it usually opens a can of worms (by the way I never understood that saying) and those little buggers are tough to get back in once they’re out! My mother always taught me to count to ten before I open my big fat trap. The problem is that I have counted to ten, twenty and thirty and I’m still angry about what happened this weekend! I’m not going to get in to whether you agree or disagreed with the Healthcare Bill because you have a right to your opinion…that’s what being an American is all about. But what ever happened to government “By the people…for the people?” Overwhelmingly in the polls, from the phone calls and the demonstrations the politicians KNEW that the American people didn’t want this bill passed and yet went ahead and did it anyway! Do I think we need Healthcare reform? Absolutely! But to push through a bill that has so much pork in it that it would make a Nebraska pig farmer say “Man, that stinks”…is a slap in the face. Just make sure your voter registration is current in November and in two in a half years so we can show them what we think of all this!

The 1st few days of “March Madness” were sure…well “Mad!” It was a lot of fun to watch, unless of course, you are a fan of Kansas, Villanova, New Mexico etc., etc. who all lost to underdogs! But, imagine the excitement at Northern Iowa, Washington and St. Mary’s! That’s what is so cool about the tournament because you just never know. You can throw out the ranking when you get a gym full of screaming fans and a team, who sometimes have never been there, getting to play on that national stage! As you can tell, I had no money riding on this because even with my brackets destroyed by all the upsets I’m still smiling! I heard the other day that they figure that businesses lose around 2 billion dollars in productivity during the tournament and I believe it! Of course, that doesn’t pertain here at the radio station….because we aren’t that productive anyway.

Maybe I’m showing my age…but what was that Lady GaGa was wearing at the Grammys over the weekend? She looked like the planet Jupiter having a bad hair day. Apparently, she is a talented artist (not my kind of music) but I guess I’ve never understood the need to get attention that way when you can already sing! It’s not like it’s anything new…Elton John, Prince, Cyndi Lauper etc., etc but if you can sing why not just SING! With the Super Bowl on the way I guess I can make a football reference…I like football coaches that tell their players when making a touchdown “Don’t do all those crazy dances and jump up and down like a fool…make the fans think you have been there before, have a little class.” I think I was right in the 1st place…I’m getting old.

"Or So!"
I mentioned yesterday that my daughters had started drivers training this week. I ran into the teacher this morning and he assured me that in addition to the class work that he would have them out on the road driving in a week or so. I hope he opts for the “or so.” I told him the longer the better! It just happens that last week I had a nightmare about alligators trying to bite me, then last night it was a spider the size of a dinner plate coming after me! Guess what the nightmare will be about when “or so” day gets here! I suppose it could be worse….I could have dreamed about getting re-married!!! NOW THAT’S SCARY!

Even though Groundhog Day isn’t for a while yet…I have come out of my burrow and I’m going to start blogging again. My daughter made me feel bad the other day when she said she checks all the time to see if I’ve written anything and is disappointed that I’ve been slacking. So since my guilt (it comes naturally to us Catholics) has gotten the better of me, here goes.
I’m tempted to go right back in my burrow this week and pull the covers over my head! What could be freaking my out? The Economy, The Weather or Tax time coming up???? No! My daughters started Drivers Ed classes last night!!! I know they have to grow up sometime, but this is one milestone that I’m not ready for. It’s not like I can stop it… I’ve decide that I’m going to be pro-active. I’ve decided to go out and see if the military have any second-hand Sherman Tanks that they could sell me cheap. The cars that we had to practice on back in the day, had acres and acres of metal between us and any potential hazard. Now they all look like those clown cars you see at the circus! Maybe I can get the state of Michigan to make them stay on their learners permit until they are about 30 so at least I can yell (I mean) INSTRUCT them in the finer points of driving while still in the car with them! I think I need a beer!
