I grew up in Marquette (Harvey to be exact) from 12 years old on. My family was originally from the Chicago area but I had the chance to move to the U.P. with my older Brother when I was 12 and jumped at it.
I got the “bug” for radio early on in life listening to the AM “Clear Channel” stations of 89 WLS, Super-CFL (AM 1000) and WGN Chicago, WJR Detroit and WHAS Louisville Kentucky among others. My Childhood Radio hero’s included Larry Lujack, John “Records” Landecker, Kris Eric Stevens and special voices such as Jay Roberts (“Night Flight” on WJR) and John Doremos. I loved the humor of the AM Super Jocks of the 70’s and the commanding voices, quality and professionalism of such special personalities as Jay Roberts and John Doremus
I got my big “break” in Radio being interviewed on the radio during a fair near Three Rivers Michigan when I was 8 or 9…...I was hanging on the monkey bars at the time. But that was it….I was “bit”.
I took Radio and TV at Marquette Senior High School, which in the 70’s was one of the few High Schools in the country to have their own Radio and TV station. In my junior year at MSHS I was working at NMU’s campus station and at WJPD AM and FM. At that time JPD was in Ishpeming and not yet Country….the conversion was good for the station and owner but not much fun for “Rockers” like me.
While going to MTU from 1979 to 1985 I worked at Tech’s campus station and several stations in the Copper Country, among others. I tried to get a job at MTU’s classical station, but for some reason did not get it when I could not pronounce the names of several famous classical music composers……..
When I got out of Tech I got my first real job (with a real paycheck too!) and said I would never work in radio again……..18 years later…here I am again!
After working in the real world for almost 15 years, I came back home to the U.P. in 1999 and have not regretted it! I have a wonderful family and get to live in the boonies where I hunt and fish, whenever the Radio Gods let me!
Most people know I am the Engineer here at the Radio Results Network. Somehow, I managed to get back on the air a little bit. I get the biggest kick out of being on KOOL because the songs I now play as “Oldies” I used to play as Top40 back in the days of 45’s, 33 and a third’s and Carts!
That’s probably more then you wanted to know….however….if you buy me a beer or good cup of coffee…..I will tell you some of my stories working concerts at the Lakeview Arena in the 70’s!
